scott mcmillan about bridges on the liminal website: machinefabriek, aka rutger zuyderfelt, has co-curated this bridge-themed compilation with visual artist gerco hiddink, bringing together eight musicians (four pairings of two) across its four lavishly decorated sides, lovely spinning zoetropes all. each pairing were given recordings made on location at four different bridges in the netherlands to which they were to react independently, and the results were then mixed together. they were, if you like, building the same bridge, but from opposite ends, only able to guess at what was going on at the other side, and hoping they would meet in the middle. and with a little luck, some sound creative instinct, and a bit of help in the mixing, they have pulled it off: the constructions are not just stable enough to bear weight, but enjoyable to cross. the musicians recruited into this project have reacted in interesting, different and complementary ways to the source materials... read more

mike about bridges on the norman records website: this record is pretty mysterious! i've picked it out of the review pile because i liked the look of its outrageously elaborate packaging and totally gorgeous picture discs. pretty surprising to me that they'd go to such lengths to make it look this snazzy when it's only an edition of 250 but, well, i guess it'll make a couple of hundred people very happy. i'm struggling to find out much information about this, but as far as i can gather each side of this double lp contains a different duet between two giants of the experimental minimal improv scene... read more

frans de waard about bridges in vital weelkly:
images of this album have been shown around facebook, twitter and such like, and already met great acclaim and indeed: what a cover! so, what is it? not easy to tell. rutger zuydervelt, the fabriek that is a machine, recorded four different bridges between sinderen and nijmegen (ho! ho!) in the netherlands, along with visual material by designer gerco hiddink. he created a great visual work, which is displayed on the cover but also on the two picture discs themselves. a great visual thing. the field recordings were then passed onto eight musicians, all from the world of improvisation and asked to improvise along with the material and send it to zuydervelt, who then mixed all of it together, in pairs of two players at a time. quite a complicated scheme, i'd say, but the result is very nice. zuydervelt has grouped the players, so there are saxophones played by jim denley and espen reinertsen, percussion piece by burkhard beins and jon mueller, saxophone by mats gustafsson and trumpet by nate wooley, bass drum and crotales by erik carlsson along with drums and amplified roto tom by steven hess. not always the field recordings sound: they seem almost absent on the muller/beins side, but do play a big role on the one by denley/reinertsen, and in the carlsson/hess piece the many cars passing the nijmegen bridge are also considerably important. some of this playing, on all four sides, sound like they were done together, rather than separate. excellent work all around, some great music, excellent images, and a fine concept behind all of this. hard to tell who did what, and that's in this ego-world a great thing.

bridges reviewed at boomkat: if there was an award for best looking record of the year, bridges would be coolly posing at the top of the list (...) the musicians didn't play together, instead providing separate reactions to the source material which was then mixed with the original recordings by zuydervelt and mastered by the esteemed giuseppe ielasi for optimal clarity. the results are vivid, dynamic documents of the life of, erm, four dutch bridges, but as you can probably gauge from the names involved, they're really quite special, and when coupled with the painstakingly edited zoetropic images on the picture disc, they've transformed something generally regarded as static and functionally commonplace, into an immersive, intriguing audio-visual environment to be enjoyed in your own home.

summer-autumn.2008
gerco: four bridges documented in a couple of hours of shakey video. i edit dozens of small filmploops per bridge. the exported stills I place in rings on the vinyl. and when the record is on the turntable the video comes alive again in stop-motion. as a moving photograhicscore, with suggestions of atmosphere, rhythm, hectics versus silence and fragments of lyrics. bridges between sound and vision. now It's up to the musician!

27.05.2008
gerco cycles from nijmegen to sinderen and films the bridge across the waal, the rhine, the netterden channel and the bergerslagbrook.

gerco: not long afterwards. i get on my bicycle and leave our home in nijmegen. the first bridge is the one crossing the waal. with my videocamera I registrate details. pigeons in a row on the pale-grey ledges of the bridge, swirling water round the piles, declarations of love in graffiti: 'you are beautiful', 'I love you'. They could have been poplyrics. through ooijpolder and düffel I cycle on until the pink bridge looms up. she stands out in an unreal way against the clear blue sky. again, there's a message of love ('ich liebe dich auch') and a cryptic invitation ('aamstag + aonntag unter am rhein'). The faded red metalpaint is patched up here and there, the round screw caps are like giant nipples of metal.

gerco: i continue until I reach the drawbridge over the netterden border-channel. water and bridge are almost completely overgrown with green. the waterlevel is indicated by both german and dutch standard. when would this bridge have been drawn for the last time? in sinderen again. a few hundred meters further through some meadows, the small cattlebridge crosses the bergerslagbrook ('don't play by the waterside!'). the picturesque structure of halfly decayed railroad ties is now fixed in rough concrete. the cloads are floating in the water amongst the duckweed. nosey black- and red-pied cows stand at the edge.

spring.2008
when driving from nijmegen to sinderen, gerco passes the bridge across the rhine near emmerich (germany): maaike sits behind the wheel of our white fiat panda. the landscape of the achterhoek glides by. 'bocage' I once learned from my photograhy teacher. on the horizon appears the pink silhouette of the bridge over the rhine at emmerich. as a child my father used to take me on long bikerides, starting at our home in sinderen. sometimes we cycled on to the foot of the bridge, but we seldom crossed it. Most of the times we returned after a short break, seeking our way home via an alternative route. once this bridge marked the boundery of my world.

spring.2008
gerco is invited to join the ONcovered project (initiated by productiehuis Oost Nederland): what if the process of making a record is turned around and the record starts with the sleeve design instead of the music?
